It's All Happening At The Zoo

(image taken from, released into public domain)

Today, I was walking through the cubicles at work, as I do every morning on my way to the kitchen to get my horrible for me Diet Coke with the brain killing Aspartame and something hit me, and it wasn’t the filing cabinet drawer that people continually leave open. It was the name plate on the outside of the cubicles. They say:

Finance > Accounts Payable > John Smith

Finance > Accounting > Mary Smith

And go on and on like that, Finance > Sub group > Name

Then my brain flashed, as it sometimes does, to a point in my life when I’ve seen something similar.

The zoo.

Rodentia > Abrocomidae > Chinchilla

Primates > Lemuridae > Lemurs

Primates > Hominids > Human

I had to stop walking while this sunk in. It’s a zoo, a human zoo. Order: Finance, Family: Financial Planning, Class: Victorya.

We push levers for rewards, given toys to ‘stimulate us,’ and live in our little cages in specific areas of the zoo.

So, what’s your order and family?

We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo.
How about you, you, you?
You can come too, too, too.
We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo.

I can't remember where I learned that from. Ha-ha.

How true, our cubes are our cages. Some of the people in my office behave like they are in a zoo too ;-)

Mine too fish :) especially the bosses that bellow out from time to time.

Chewy - love the song :) like a wheels on a bus thing.

I've never really worked in an office before (I only lasted for 7 weeks, then I resigned HA HA), so I know nothing much about offices.

Amel - lucky you! They are interesting microcosms though, filled with every type of person you can imagine! And today, feeding time is at the 'desk' aka 'pen' because of budget issues. No lunch time walk for me.

Yeah, I can imagine the various types of microcosms. ;-D I've heard so many office stories about such microcosms from my friends he he he he...

Ah...too bad about the feeding time. Well, hope at least you enjoy your work (I think so, right?) he he he...

we refer to the main 1st floor area of rows of cubes as the cube farm - lol!

another part of the office is called the fishbowl - as it is separated from the cube farm by glass. They finally made the glass so you can't see through it. The fishbowl label remains.

fortunately we don't have titles/subgroups on our name plates around here.

Rachelle - lame? Never! Your an Alpaca! Grave and beauty are what I associate with you, and generousness.

Liss - must every finance office have a fishbowl? We have one too. They finally got shades for it though, as our auditors hated being watched all the time. I like the cubicle farm :) as long as they don't reproduce, although there was a new cubicle born in my area recently.

The building where I work was previously used for other purposes other than an office building so the walls are all in the wrong places. This has resulted in sporadic placement of cubicle walls instead of orderly rows. In our department we are hiring new people even though we don't have room to put them. Space is a very important commodity so even though other departments have extra room, they won’t share with us. So, now we are doubling up. I will soon be sharing my small office with another person. I only have an office because when I arrived it was the only space that wasn’t currently occupied. It had been a very small meeting room prior to my arrival.

A friend gave me the book Cube Chic which I just love. One day, I’ll remake my office using one of their designs. See the book at:

Geez, wonder who took these pics of their offices. If I was ever caught taking a pic of mine, I would be burned at the stake after I was frisked to the highest degree! My whole life has been in cubes; I wouldn't know what life is like without one. Pretty bad huh?
